Entomophagy – Simply, it is the human use of insects as food.
Cricket protein, and bug protein, have been a staple ingredient of diets all over the world for centuries. Countries in Africa, Asia, and South America have been incorporating insects into their daily diets and it’s now moving its way to Western countries. Why choose crickets over the other 1,900 species of edible insects out there? Crickets are among the top insects to eat – due mainly to their high source of protein and delicious taste.
Using crickets as a protein source, not only is it delicious, but also leads us towards a more sustainable future. Cricket farming produces less GreenHouse Gases than livestock farming, and having fresh, clean air is a future I want to be a part of! What about you?
What type of cricket do I use?
Fit Cricket uses the Acheta Domesticus, also known as the common house cricket. These crickets are native to Southeast Asia and have made their way into our homes over here in North America. They are typically bred as food for pets like amphibians, birds and reptiles; and now YOU! The reason why I use this type of cricket is all about flavour. The Acheta Domesticus has a certain and special flavour compared to other types: nutty, earthy and mild. If you’ve tried cricket protein powder or bars before and didn’t fancy them, well try again! It very well could have been the type of cricket that company uses.
